about

Walter de Hellyon was born in about 1317 at Ashperton, a small village a few miles west of Ledbury. He inherited lands from his father and also leased land and property close by in Much Marcle, including the mansion of Hellens, then know as Hellyons. He became the steward of the Grandison family and as such would have been of Norman, rather than Saxon, descent.
Walter is believed to have died in about 1360 when he would have been in his early forties. Who knows, perhaps he fell victim to the second pandemic of the Black Death which, apparently, this time around, hit wealthy people very badly as well as the general peasantry.
In England there are only ninety-three wooden figures surviving as memorials from the medieval period. Most are knights and ladies, with a few vicars and monks thrown in for good measure. There are only four civilians left, the best of which must be Walter de Hellyon in Much Marcle church. He's a national treasure. Go and see him!
