about

THE CALL (NO MORE BLUES :) Voices - Huw, Justin Preece and Katie Hardy. Guitar - Justin Preece.
I often write about vicars. Most are invented characters based on those I know, but the one in this song is purely imaginary. I thought about a man of the cloth suffering from depression and what would cheer him up as he became better, so this song is essentially a list of such things. Alas, I sing the song on this track and am accompanied by Justin Preece on guitar - plus an incidental third party.

THE SILVER TRUMPET: Voice – Huw.
This little piece was written after a restless night courtesy of the full moon shining in through my bedroom window. On that occasion I was so troubled I began to remember the sorts of fears I'd had as a child, one of them being that there was someone (or something) hidden in the tall wardrobe standing next to my bed!

EELS: Voice – Huw. Electronic Effects - David Cooper Orton.
A short poem in praise of the miraculous eel and the Somerset eel in particular; that most aristocratic of all freshwater fish with blue in its blood.

IF ONE DAY: Voice - Huw. Guitar - David Cooper Orton.
Here's an adaptation of the old nursery rhyme, 'Hey, Diddle, Diddle.' I'm accompanied by David Cooper Orton who plays a ravishingly beautiful piece of improvised guitar music. Just magic!

COLD BREEZE: Voices - Huw, Sara Gavin and Eric Rollo. Guitar - David Cooper Orton.
This is a simple tale of unrequited love. The words are very sparse but they are set nicely into David Cooper Orton's sumptuous guitar accompaniment. I love it!

GHOSTS: Voice – Huw.
A true poem in the sense that its narrative is driven along by the rhythm of the words, and one too that describes a sense of mystery about past lives in old houses.

HENRY'S LEGACY: Voice - Huw. Piano - Dave Jones.
Puncknowle Manor House in Dorset is described in some guide books as being the finest old house in the county. Unfortunately it was once the home of Henry Shrapnel who invented the deadly exploding artillery shell.

SMALL COMFORT: Voice - Huw. Stretched Guitar - David Cooper Orton.
A poem that hopefully reflects the sense of anguish I feel when I'm struck by writer's block.

APES: Voice – Huw.
Being so intelligent it's easy for us to forget that we are little more than great apes. So, here's a short poem to remind us of that.

MY OPEN MIC: Voice – Huw.
Performing in open-mics is a blessing and a curse. On the one hand you get to try out new pieces on an audience and practice stage-craft while you're about it. On the other it's hellish if no one listens or the other performers are dreadful.

NO MORE BLUES: Sung by ‘Bluesy Susie and the Hot Three’ for Brecon Jazz Club at ‘The Muse’ in December, 2016.
Another version of the first track on the CD and, although the recording is quite poor, this gives you an idea of what my lyrics could sound like if sung by a decent singer.

CHRISTMAS POEM: Voice – Huw.
Christmas comes at the worst time of year because of the short days and dreadful weather, but it has its compensations too.

CHUCK’S DELUXE: Voice - Huw. Guitar and Percussion - David Cooper Orton.
David and I pay homage here to the great Chuck Berry. “Son of a, son of a, son of a slave – Standing ovation the spoil of the stave!”

TOO LATE TO SIGN THE PLEDGE: Voices - Christine Williams, Huw and Laurie Pyle. Saxophone - Tom Selway.
This poem tells the story of Dylan Thomas's death in New York back in the nineteen-fifties.

OTHER ROADS: Voice – Huw.
A confessional and unapologetic poem about the course I've chosen to take in life.

FIGMENTS: Voice – Huw. Piano – Gareth Hall.
A nonsense rhyme! Perhaps best listened to after a few drinks when it would, no doubt, make perfect sense.
